But the lack of interest in the negotiations should not be misunderstood as apolitical

"Be careful, do not get carried away." This appeal by the political satire group Buro fur Ungewohnliche Mabnahmen (Buro for Unusual Measures) to the SPD exploratory group, which is supposed to explore government options with the CDU/CSU, did not find any resonance in the media. The letter reminded the SPD politicians of their election promises to curb rent increases:

According to a survey, 47% of Berlin women fear losing their apartment because of rent increases – similar to most cities. Catastrophic speculator-friendly laws led more and more massively to arbitrary luxury modernizations, fully legal extortionate rents, impoverishment, de-housing and de facto expulsion of people from their homes. Such laws as z.B. the apportionment-§ 559 must be abolished or fundamentally amended so that people do not have to live in permanent fear! The hard case clause is only a cover – but factually completely insufficient. This creates a situation worse than the Middle Ages, especially in Germany! There the people only "Tenth" Part of the budget – today it may be many times more in this country."

Office for Unusual Measures

Now it can be considered naive to remind the parties of their election promises and the SPD of the meaning of its first letter. Undeniably, however, the fear of high rents is an ie that drives many people right into the middle classes.

In the aforementioned letter, the abolition of the modernization apportionment law in accordance with § 559 of the German Civil Code (BGB) mentions measures that could be implemented if political will existed. Kurt Jotter of the Office for Unusual Measures recommends that the SPD focus on such ies.

Should the realization of this fail and new elections be held, the Union could perhaps even win back votes with such social milestones, or at least win a new election. The government must ensure parliamentary majorities that would make a coalition to the left of the CDU/CSU possible.

The mere fact that these majorities were never used when they still existed until the last elections shows how illusory the hope for a social democratic reform policy is today.

Population in hibernation

Initiatives such as those of the Office for Unusual Measures could also serve to make this fact known to a wider public and thus to spark off extra-parliamentary activities. The widespread disinterest of large segments of the population in soundings of the various government options suggests such a reading.

Large segments of the population no longer expect the parties to improve their living conditions. When they hear the word "reform," they know that new impositions are coming. Like the term "Reform" from the hope of a better life under capitalism to the horror, Rainer Balcerowiak wrote in his polemic "The hypocrisy of the reform" well analyzed.

The sociologist Ulf Kadritzke has in the as knowledgeable, as easily understandable written book "Myth of the center or the disposal of the class question" Dismantles the myth that elections can only be won in the center. This center does not exist as a fixed point at all. It is the place where the best interests of capital are guaranteed.

This is also the reason why even such measures as a tenant-friendly reform of § 559, which are not really system-breaking, are not propagated by the parties. There you had to mess with capital interests and this is not career demanding.

Excitement over climate target that no one thought was realistic

The widespread apathy with which large sections of the media, and even more so the population, have allowed the explorations for a new government to go by was interrupted a few days ago when it leaked out that possibly in the chapter "Climate and energy" the sentence should stand: "The short-term goal for 2020 will not be achieved from today’s point of view."

Hardly anyone doubts the factual truth of this statement. "This may be half realistic. In terms of climate policy, the statement is a serious mistake", comments Taz environment editor Bernd Potter. Like him argue many critics who criticize that here a fact is named.

"The rough coalition resigns even before the start. It not only contradicts the promise of Angela Merkel and Martin Schulz. By effectively abandoning the 2020 target, it also devalues the entire remaining concept", argues Potter.

But the promise was broken by the fact that the goal was not achieved, as Potter ames, and not by the fact that the failure was formulated. On the contrary, it could be discussed whether the goal was unrealistic from the beginning, i.e. whether the promise was hollow. Or was the promise feasible, but no steps were taken to implement it?.

In both cases, the politicians were to be criticized. But not even naming the fact that the goal is not achieved prevents such a rational criticism. Now this is a common method of an ecological approach, where it is more about feelings, courage and placebos. So even the promise of a job "We achieve the climate target" could make you feel good.
